Bertolt Brecht, a theatre revolutionary, poet from the country, outsider, looks back to his life from 1956, the year of his departure, at East Berlin: teenager provocations at Augsburg throughout the First World War, premature poetic and romantic flights of fancy at the Munich and Berlin of the 1920s, his escape from Hitler, returning from the usa exile, accompanied by his own later years captured in a dilemma between timeless classic and a failing GDR class fighter, an indefatigable totally free soul and jeopardized artist.
