The Golden Legend
The children's pool has played an essential part throughout film history commonly as a romping ground for its Dolce Vita. Nevertheless, it could be much more, even sinister, like in Sunset Boulevard. In Leyenda dorada a rather unglamorous swimmingpool of diminished charm forms the focal point of the narrative. A summer's day at Montánchez's Spanish village, and folks of all ages enjoy themselves at the outside pool. It is an depiction of community, under Our Lady of Consolation's lofty gaze. While aggression conflicts, rivalries and animosities have a siesta, a pleasant break is taken by the villagers. The film draws to the custom of New Objectivity. But unlike Robert Siodmak's Menschen am Sonntag (1930) and its lido sequence, this is a miniature summer fairy tale.
