The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts
The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts is just a NBC television special show hosted by entertainer Dean Martin from 1974 to 1984. For a series of 54 specials and shows, Martin would occasionally"roast" a star. These roasts were patterned after the roasts held in the New York Friars' Club in Nyc. The format would have the star guest seated in a table, and one by one the guest of honor was affectionately chided or insulted about his livelihood by his actor friends.
In 1973, The Dean Martin Show has been declining in popularity. The final season of his variety show could be retooled requiring less of Martin's participation. For the 1973--1974 season, a new feature known as"Man of the Week Celebrity Roast" was inserted to try and pick up the ratings. The roasts seemed to be popular among television viewers and are often marketed in post-issues within the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts and never The Dean Martin Show. NBC drew a contract with Martin do more roast specials and also todo a couple specials Following the Dean Martin Show was cancelled in 1974. Starting with Bob Hope in 1974, the roast proven into a hit, leading to a great many roasts to follow and has been taped in California.
