The epic narrative of celebrated Pulitzer-prize winning author Alex Haley's ancestors portrayed from the acclaimed a dozen hour miniseries Roots, was told in his 1976 best-seller Roots: The Saga of an American Family. The docu drama covers a period of history that begins in Gambia and concludes during post-Civil War United States. This 1977 mini series eventually won 9 Emmy awards, a Golden Globe award, and a Peabody award, and still stands as probably the most watched miniseries at U.S. history.
