Aside from having the origin material, this television series conveys no connection to the 1982 anime film led by Fumihiko Takayama and created by Yoshimitsu Banno for Toho, though both works share the same title in Western. But since the 1982 film wasn't released in Japan before 1986 - the identical year in - the two productions are often confused.
