Throughout the campaign for re election, the politician Paul Madvig decides to tidy up his past, associating to the reformist politician Ralph Henry that is respectable and refusing the support of the gangster Nick Varna. Ed Beaumont, Paul's right arm, finds his own body on the street After Ralph's son, Taylor Henry, a politician and the lover of Paul's sister's Opal, is killed. Nick employs The Observer's case to induce the publisher Clyde Matthews touse the paper.
